This aircraft belonged to the 41st Fighter Squadron of the 35th Fighter Group. On March 11, 1944 the Thunderbolt was being flown by 2/Lt George Gaffney on a mission to escort Liberators of the 90th Bombardment Group. This is a standalone repaint of the stock CFS3 P-47D. By Daniel Leahy.

High Altitude Interceptor The U7 was developed as per a requirement of the RLM ("Reichsluftfahrtministerium" = air defense ministry). The Luftwaffe feared the appearance of high altitude bombers (B-29, B-17 flying at high altitude, reconnaissance Mosquito's) and asked for an aircraft capable of attacking above 8000 meters. The R3 carried two Mk108 cannons in the upper nose in place of the weak 4xMg17. Serial Production started by September 1943 although similar pre-series aircraft under the designation G-2/U9 had already been in production for a couple of month.
